The Island of Española
August 22, 2006
Orion Española, Ltd. has performed extensive evaluations, research and fieldwork into coffee growing techniques, harvesting, blending, production and distribution from coffee plantations on the island of the Dominican Republic. Orion Española has consulted with professional international organizations, analyzed and assessed the most positive and successful course for a start up coffee plantation to be established in the Southern Region of the island. Their plan has focused on the acquisition of existing coffee plantation land to successfully grow organic coffee trees in rich volcanic soil for harvesting, processing and distribution. Orion Española’s master plan includes building two to four coffee processing plants to process, blend, roast, and package the finished coffee products for distribution to international markets in Europe and the United States.
Orion Española, Ltd. is a corporation formed in the Island of Barbados in April 2003 with the purpose and mission to acquire extensive acres of fertile plantation land in the Polo Mountain Region, near Barahona Harbor in the Southern Region of the Dominican Republic with the initial land acquisition totaling an estimated 15,000 acres.
The plantation land to be acquired in its present state is predominately raw mountain land with a quantity of existing older coffee trees, owned by underprivileged farmers that have not successfully maintained or cultivated this land in several years. The farmers in this Southern Region could not continue to produce Dominican coffee for the industry due to their inability to obtain financing through their local banks with interest rates in excess of 40% to 50%. The purchase price of these plantations is at a very profitable selling price due to these existing factors. Through negotiations of Orion Española’s president with the plantation owners, Orion Española has been successful in obtaining an excellent price per acre for the plantation land. If the same plantation acreages were purchased in the Northern Region of the island; the price would be three to four times the price per acre.
Orion Española, Ltd. will be forming another corporation in Barbados under the name of “Española Café, Ltd.” and the owner of this corporation will be Orion Española, Ltd. When this corporation is formed, it will register in the Dominican Republic as an “exporter” of the “Española Café” coffee products. Also, Orion Española, Ltd. will procure legal permits and documents from the Dominican Government, registering Orion Española, Ltd. and “Española Café, Ltd.” as exporters, granting “Free Trade” exportation of their primary products from the Dominican Republic. In addition, Orion Española, Ltd. will produce a secondary coffee product under “Orion Española Cafe” from the original Spanish name for the island, ‘Isla Española’ for distribution in the Dominican Republic for consumers in this market and other market areas.
The founders of the corporation, Orion Española, Ltd. include a Dominican Republic Citizen, as the President, Johanny Romero de Conti, Yves Conti, as Executive Vice President, a Citizen of Switzerland, Engineer Agronomist Jorge Henrique Peña, a Dominican Citizen and Camilo Peña, Director, Dominican Citizen with a total combined management experience and knowledge in business, management and financial experience in excess of sixty years. Page 6 – Orion Española, Ltd.’s Coffee Plantation Business Plan Summary – “Growing Organic Coffee in the Dominican Republic” With necessary capital provided to implement their business plan, Orion Española, Ltd. will immediately move forward with the plantation acquisitions, hire their administrative staff and personnel. This launch will include the engagement of professional teams from FiBL1 – and Agricultural Institute from Switzerland, who will supervise the preparation of the land, planting the seedlings in nursery beds for a three month growth period, during the completion of the land preparation, and implement the installation of a drip irrigation system (similar to irrigation system used in Israel).
Orion Española Ltd. will immediately commence the construction of a solar plant as an alternate energy source, and a water system and waste management facility to service the plantation. Central offices, warehouse facilities, and employee housing will be built, along with the construction of roads and implementation of the “construction tracking system”8 to provide security and protect the assets of the plantation area. Construction of the first coffee plant will be started on the plantation to establish a storage facility to clean, blend and prepare high quality “green coffee beans” which will be purchased initially from local plantation owners who have an excess supply over their quota. These green coffee beans will be stored while Orion Española’s planting process is underway. Orion Española will negotiate and consummate a contract with a Danish coffee plant manufacturer (Niro, Inc.2) to commence with plans to build a large coffee processing plant in Cabral, a city near Barahona Harbor. This plant will be a turn-key facility, equipped with all the processing equipment installed, personnel trained, and ready to commence the coffee processing operations. Orion Española will simultaneously establish the coffee product line, working with professional marketing groups such as Howard Consulting3, in the preliminary preparation of coffee packaging designs, labeling and promotion plans for the distribution of Orion’s coffee products under the registered name, “Española Café,” to be distributed through the international market centers as “specialty coffee products. ”
Orion Española’s plans to accomplish their objectives are based upon their assumptions, expectations, estimates and other factors Orion Española considered important to implement their master plan. By their nature, many of these plans and activities are “forward-looking” and dependent upon known and unknown risks, uncertainties and other factors which may cause actual results, performance or achievements to be materially different from that implied by this business plan, assumptions, expectations or estimates. Orion Española sees a coffee industry that will be fully developed with fully grown organic coffee trees in an estimated time frame of three years.
CAFTA Treaty5 – In addition, with the CAFTA Treaty being signed by the U.S. Senate on August 5, 2005, which defined that all exporting and importing of goods will have specific exemptions from levies and taxes on all exported products, thereby allowing the cost of all the coffee products being shipped from the Dominican Republic to be more economical. This will ultimately affect Orion Española’s bottom line – “creating a more profitable industry” and is an ideal opportunity as timing is excellent to implement Orion Española’s coffee plantation’s business plan.
Orion Española’s goal is to become one of the largest producers and distributors in the world, producing and distributing organically grown coffee in the Dominican Republic who has been recognized as the producer of one of the “BEST COFFEES IN THE WORLD.
Orion Española sees an excellent market opportunity due to several factors:
FIRST – A huge bottom line savings would be incurred in the exporting of coffee products to international markets due to the benefits of a “Free Zone 4”from the recently passed bill, the CAFTA Treaty5, which presents a “golden opportunity” At this time, to build a coffee industry of this magnitude as these benefits can greatly affect the market price of Orion Española’s coffee products in the international markets.
SECOND – The cost of the plantation land in this area in the southern region is extremely low, based on appraisals of other plantations on the island. This will create savings and will affect a profit for Orion Española’s financial statements.
THIRD – Organic products are in demand in the marketplace! With Orion Española hiring professional teams from FiBL1 Agricultural Institute of Switzerland and using their technology and expertise, this venture of creating a fully-organic coffee plantation have all the merits of being successful. FiBL’s certification stamp will be on each product distributed, which will greatly enhance the image and product quality to the consumers, suppliers and importers in the markets.
FOURTH – Labor is plentiful in the Dominican Republic, and wages to planters, pickers, and daily workers will be based on a higher than average daily wage of $15.00 per day. This labor supply and cost of wages will also increase the bottom line for increased profits. It is anticipated that over 5,000 to 6,000 indirect jobs will be provided to the Dominican people.
FIFTH – The acquisition of these plantations in this area have very rich fertile soil with excellent growing conditions, ideal climate, altitude, and rainfall, that affords high levels of production to supply the coffee industry.
SIXTH – Upon completion of the coffee plantation, Orion Española would move forward with their master plan to incorporate the “heritage and reputation” of the island to produce the “BEST COFFEES IN THE WORLD” organically grown” under the brand name of “Española Café” from the island of Española.
SUCCESS - It is predicted that this venture will be a very successful one with Orion Española utilizing the expertise of various professionals in the field, as the timing is right with “Free Trade 4” available for exporting, and the present market demand for coffee is at its highest peak.
This island is known as “Española” (from Spanish ‘Isla Española,’ the Spanish island) lies in the heart of the Caribbean. Española is mountainous and forested, with plains and plateaus. The Dominican Republic total area in size is 48,443 sq. km, including some offshore islands, but its population is not much more at 8.9 million, growing at 1.9% a year. In the Dominican Republic, 65% of the population is urban. The climate is tropical but tempered by sea breezes. The cooler months are between December and March.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus proclaimed that “There is no more beautiful island in the world” than Española. The ancestors of the Taino Indians welcomed Columbus on his first voyage. These inhabitants were very peaceful, docile, generous and cooperative; however, they lacked iron weapons and European technology. Columbus’ flagship, the SANTA MARIA, ran a foul on a reef and was wrecked a few miles off the coast, however, with the help of the Indians, they were able to salvage all of the valuables, but the ship was lost. Bartholomeu Columbus founded the city of Santo Domingo in 1496, which is the capital city and where there has been a enormous monument built and dedicated to Columbus. The year 1992 was marked by the 500-year anniversary celebration of Columbus’ discovery of America.
